Video: I'd rather be in charge, Charlotte Beers at Tedx Women 2012

Hi Good day ppl !

A colleague friend shared this video from Tedx Women 2012.
It has a collection of some wonderful, inspiring women.

This video, I have tried to embed here is about Charlotte Beers.
She recently authored her book: I'd rather be in Charge. Know more here.

Charlotte Beers (born July 26, 1935 in Beaumont, Texas) is an American businesswoman and former Under Secretary of State. She began her career as an account executive at J. Walter Thompson Advertising, becoming its first female Senior Vice President. She next served as CEO at Tatham-Laird & Kudner, followed by five years as Chairman/CEO of Ogilvy & Mather Worldwide. In 1997, Fortune Magazine placed her on the cover of their first issue to feature the most powerful women in America.

Charlotte serves on the Board of Martha Stewart Living Omnimedia and conducts seminars throughout Europe and the United States called “The X Factor,” “X” representing the potential of women to lead. The workshops have given women the tools to take charge, find pride and power at work, and to learn to never miss a moment to lead in the many industries they represent.

Direct link to the Video: http://tedxwomen.org/speakers/charlotte-beers/

I have tried to summarize the points she makes:

Points of Communication:
Personal Clarity
Memorability
Persuasiveness

Women think its about the Work. They think we are the WORK, let the work speak for us.
We house fearlessness & fear in us.
Women carry Family influences like luggage on our back.
Delivery system depicts who you are & how you delivery.

Keep a journal, watch yourself, how you behave, know what to discard, amend, improve.
Find your own traits, one which is genetic, one which is priceless which is unique is your true trait.

Who you are, what you stand, what you can count on for, that defines your Personal clarity.
Use your life at work to define & expand  you.

Memorability=Agreement to master the art of Communication. Golden rule-its not what you say, its what they hear.
You should become extremely careful of your receiver-you know them, you respect them if you don't like them. Understand that your looking for a certain response instead of worrying about what to say, worry about the kind of response you want. Edit, eliminate the unnecessary, women have the habit of going on and on. Deliver the powerful punch with power.

Persuasion -You should be prepared sometimes to step out of the team & say I believe. If you are convinced, committed & show unlikely passion , thats when people will understand that you really believe  & are committed to it.

If you want to make a change, if u want to offer something new,if you want to step out & hope people will agree & sign on, you have to practice and master these steps.

Loved the way she supports her theory with real life experiences.

There are lot many more inspiring speakers in this show. Check here.

So go through some women-inspiring posts:

I feel like a woman activist now :)

Have a great week ahead ! Communicate with clarity, memorability, persuasiveness ! :)

Bye. Tc.

Whats that pic-21

Hi Good day ppl !

Got this unique snap from an old album.

This was clicked outside a small store at Mogul lane, Matunga West. This dog was playfully biting the kitten, who in turn was going on teasing the dog. This play of theirs went for more than 15 minutes. We were worried the dog might hurt the kitten, but it was super protective of it. Everyday the dog used to love it when we petted it.

Short Story: Flying !

Hi Good day ppl !
I heard this story on the 107.1FM radio one thursday morning on RJ Keesha's show.

Its a beautiful short story, which makes one grateful of all the things we have & take for granted.

Flying !

Once upon a time there was a little boy who was raised in a orphanage.

The little boy had always wished that he could fly like a bird. It was very difficult for him to understand why he could not fly. There were birds at the zoo that were much bigger than he, and they could fly.

"Why can't I?" he thought. "Is there something wrong with me?" he wondered.

There was another little boy who was crippled. He had always wished that he could walk and run like other little boys and girls.

"Why can't I be like them?" he thought.

One day the little orphan boy who had wanted to fly like a bird ran away from the orphanage. He came upon a park where he saw the little boy who could not walk or run playing in the sandbox.

He ran over to the little boy and asked him if he had ever wanted to fly like a bird.

"No," said the little boy who could not walk or run. "But I have wondered what it would be like to walk and run like other boys and girls."

"That is very sad." said the little boy who wanted to fly. "Do you think we could be friends?" he said to the little boy in the sandbox.

"Sure." said the little boy.

The two little boys played for hours. They made sand castles and made really funny sounds with their mouths. Sounds which made them laugh real hard. Then the little boy's father came with a wheelchair to pick up his son. The little boy who had always wanted to fly ran over to the boy's father and whispered something into his ear.

"That would be OK," said the man.

The little boy who had always wanted to fly like a bird ran over to his new friend and said, "You are my only friend and I wish that there was something that I could do to make you walk and run like other little boys and girls. But I can't. But there is something that I can do for you."

The little orphan boy turned around and told his new friend to slide up onto his back. He then began to run across the grass. Faster and faster he ran, carrying the little crippled boy on his back. Faster and harder he ran across the park. Harder and harder he made his legs travel. Soon the wind just whistled across the two little boys' faces.

The little boy's father began to cry as he watched his beautiful little crippled son flapping his arms up and down in the wind, all the while yelling at the top of his voice,

"I'M FLYING, DADDY. I'M FLYING!"

Gratitude makes you humble & really relish the blessings we have, doesnt it :)

Bye.Take care. Thank you for reading this post :)

Mango Tree:
Its an indigenous tree. Its fruit is called aam,amba,..mango. The English word mango probably originated from the Malayalam word "maanga" , then via Portuguese as manga. It has several uses apart from its delicious fruit which ripens in summer. There are a lot of varieties of these plants. It is considered auspicious in India.

Story: There was once a king who had a beautiful queen. There was a demoness who was jealous of the queens beauty. So once when the queen was in a forest the demoness started chasing her. The queen then transformed herself into a beautiful lotus & hid in a lake. The demoness couldnt come in water & waited at the edge of the lake. So this continued for many days, until the king came searching for his queen in the forest. When the king saw this lotus he wanted to take it to gift his queen. When the queen tried coming out of the lake, the demoness got angry & cursed her. The queen turned into ash & lay scattered in the forest. A few years later a tree rose from the ashes which bore a delicious smelling fruit. Again the king still in his search for his missing queen came to the forest, saw the fruit, plucked it to show his people. When he reached his kingdom and showed the people the fruit, everyone wanted to touch it. In the passing of the fruit, it fell to the ground & out came the queen :).

Excerpt-The Road to Happiness

Hi Good day !

This is from the SimpleTruths website newsletter I get daily.

The Road to Happiness What will it take for you to be happy?

Benjamin Franklin pointed out that, "The U.S. Constitution doesn't guarantee happiness, only the pursuit of it. You have to catch up to it yourself."

A lot of us pin our happiness to external factors...if only we had more money...or a better house...or whatever your latest "want" is, but your happiness has been...and always will be... right inside yourself.

That concept is liberating because it finally puts you in charge of your own happiness.
An excerpt from
The Road to Happiness by Mac Anderson and BJ Gallagher.

When I travel on business, I like to talk to the taxi drivers who take me from the airport to my hotel, or to a convention center, or to a restaurant. Taxi drivers are often immigrants with interesting personal histories and unusual cultural backgrounds. I ask them how long they've been in America, how they chose which city to live in, and what they like best about where they live. Of course, I also ask them for advice on good local restaurants and any special attractions they'd recommend to a visitor.

I've had some great experiences on my travels, thanks to the advice of taxi drivers! On one trip about ten years ago, I was making conversation with the taxi driver, asking him my usual questions about how he came to live where he lived.

Then I asked him a hypothetical question: "If you could live anywhere in the world—and if money was no object—where would you live?"

Without hesitating even for a second, he replied, "I live in my heart. So it really doesn't matter where my body lives. If I am happy inside, then I live in paradise, no matter where my residence is."

I felt humbled and a little foolish for my question. Of course he was right—happiness is an inside job. He had reminded me of something I already knew, but had forgotten. If you can't find happiness inside yourself, you'll never find it in the outside world, no matter where you move. Wherever you go, there you are. You take yourself with you. I am grateful for the wisdom of that taxi driver. And I'm grateful for all the wisdom others have shared with me about how to be happy.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------

So people, like someone said Love yourself first to be able to love anyone else.

Have a great week ahead ! Love yourself, love each moment of your life :)

Whats that pic-18

Hi Good day !
Mahim, should be given the name- old automobiles & lovers paradise. Along every other lane or alley you will see some kind of vintage or unique automobile or bikes. There are cars, enfield bikes, bullet bikes,... around small garages or old houses.
On an afternoon stroll spotted this one. Its a Mercedes-Benz 220D. I am no automobile expert to recognize the model & type. So please excuse if there are any mistakes. I would love to get more info about this, though.
Check an earlier post about a unique scooter in Mahim Whats that pic-11

Mercedes-Benz is a multinational division of the German manufacturer Daimler AG. Its headquarters are in Germany. The name first appeared in 1926 under Daimler-Benz, widely regarded as the first automobile.

Look carefully, it says 220D with the distinctive Mercedes logo :)

Bright color for a sedan
I should make a series of Mahim related posts. Interesting, retro kinda of place it is.

If you would like to add to this info, Please post as comments.
Thank you in advance.

Bye. Tc. Have a fantastic week ahead ! :)

Nature: Brahma Kamal flower

Hi Good day ppl !
On the weekend gone by- 29th June 2012, we were showered with blessings to get wealthy ;)
It was in the form of not 1 but 5 Brahma kamals blooming in our garden!

Nature: Brahma Kamal flower
It is said only a few lucky people see it bloom. It brings wealth. It blooms once year only at night & dies by morning.

Brahma Kamal : known as King of Himalayan flower.Botanical name is Saussurea obvallata. The Brahma Kamal is the state flower of Uttarkhand, India.

Nature: Brahma Kamal flower
There were 4 such blooms. 2 more bloomed the next day.

Brahma Kamal, is a species of flowering plant named after Brahma, the Hindu god of creation. It is native to the Himalayas, northern Burma and south-west China. A flower of the Himalayas, that blooms in the alpine habitats at the upper reaches of the mountain ranges between (approx) 11,000 to 17,000 feet. The flowers bloom in mid monsoons (July - August) amongst the rocks and grass of the hillsides in places like The Valley of Flowers and Hemkund Lake at Sapta Shringa.

We did a small pooja of one of the flower.

This flower is very sacred to Himalayan gods. It looks like bliss in the form of a flower. The story goes that once Lord Shiva was in Kailash and Parvati created Ganesha, which was unknown to Shiva. When Parvati went for a bath, she posted Ganesha as a guard outside leaving a word not to let anyone in and that moment Lord Shiva tried to enter the house and Ganesha refused. In anger Lord Shiva cut the head of Ganesha, so there was just the body without the head. On Parvati`s request Brahma created Brahma kamal, with whose
help Shiva placed the head of an elephant on to the body of Ganesha.

It has a lovely fragrance.
If you look a little closer at the photo, you'll see the central white stamen. People believe that this stamen represents Lord Krishna, while the reddish brown stalks which you can see on the closed bud represent the 100 Kauravas from the Mahabharata. Read more here

We offered 2 of them to our gods in the house. The entire room was filled with their fragrance.
Here one can also see the Brahma kamal which drips water from its petals on to the body like Amrit.
In Ramayan when the Sanjeevani herb was administered to Lakshman, he miraculously revived. In celebration, God showered flowers from heaven, which fell to the earth and took root in the Valley of Flowers. So it is called Brahma kamal, which is The God's own lotus, far from the earth!

There is a belief that the Brahmakamal should be gifted, and not bought in the market. To grow the plant, a leaf is planted in the soil (and not a seedling or stem). This leaf then multiplies and becomes a plant to a height of about 4 to 5 feet. The flower itself is around 4-5 inches in diameter and has a lovely fragrance.

This how the leaf looks.

If you see the small bud like shape protruding from the edge of the leaf, that  might turn into a flower or leaf.

This is a still to open bud of the flower. Check how the stem is coming from the leaf. This flowers always  grows from a leaf.

In the morning it looked like this.

We offered one of the flowers to Lord Shiva.
Note: This flower is confused with Brahma Kamal. In India, we call it Brahma Kamal. It is actually Dutchman's Pipe Cactus (Epiphyllum oxypetalum).

There will be more flowers blooming during Shravan, try to see atleast one bloom :) All the best.

Bye. Tc.

Travel-Sailing at Sea, 26 Jan 2012

Hi Good day ppl !

I went Sailing for the second time last weekend & since then have been asked about it multiple times.
So to give a brief idea & contact details to actually go Sailing, here is the post.
Sailing is for:
-People who love the sea or being around water bodies.
-Enthu about doing a different activity for 2-3hours.
-Want to spend quality,peaceful time.

I went Sailing for the first time in April 2010. Check the blog post : Sailing at Gateway of India! with AquasailIndia.
This time too booked a deal. But the session was organised by Mithu Nahak-mithunahak@yahoo.in.

A great person, enterpreneur spirit, good sailor, good trainer. Contact him to enjoy a session & I am sure you wont stop at 1session. You can do sailing sessions, learn & train in sailing, organise sailing parties.

Check the Activities-to-do list for other activities too.

After many cancellations, rescheduling I went with 3friend for a 2hours of superb sailing. We started from H20 at Marine drives. Sailed into the sea with a cool breeze blowing our sails high it was cool, fun, peaceful trip. If I could do this everyday, I would take a book, music, something to munch along :D

With good weather, great friends, time to enjoy, nice activity to do, a good sailor with you, laughter aplenty,... it was a memorable time :) Glad my friends loved it too !

Thats our Sailboat with the sails down. It was being inspected by the Sea gulls & they made sure we had a lot of  'good luck' for the session.

Our Sail boat with the sails up now. We were briefed about the Sailing technicalities, little training we got in helping Mithu steer the boat.

Lovely weather for Sailing. It was 2-3pm, but coz of the cool breeze we didnt feel at all hot.

Thats the mast without the sails up.

In the distance another sailboat.

This time we started from H2O at Marine lines.
Would love to learn Sailing. Will update you all about that when I do. Till then go for 1session to try it.

Contact Mithu, he will surely help you have a great sailing session.
Till then update on more fun activities & your sailing experience.

Bye. Tc. Have a great week ahead ! :)
