Incident: Give food to the needy

Greetings of the Season to everyone!

This time of year, everyone feels glad, hopeful, kind, helpful,... in short all things good.
Watching lot of Kindness, pay it forward, Xmas feeling,... videos these days. They all tug at your heart & make you teary. Make you think & want to do something good too.

Image from Mumbai Mirror

So yesterday got down at Sion, to get some work done. After that was proceeding towards my bus stop. Passed a guy selling fruits. There was a girl-don't feel like calling her a beggar, but she was poorly dressed, had some balloons in her hand must have been trying to sell at the traffic signal. She was begging the fruit seller to give her a fruit. I passed by after watching her plead repeatedly & the seller shooing her away.

I know there are these entire families around Sion, who send their kids to pester travelers for money. I always give them food. Sometimes it might be something from my tiffin which I haven't been able to finish but is not tasted. If I leave without doing something about it, it torments me for days. So now my habit is to take action according to my capacity.

Yesterday I didn't have any. I passed by, I kept looking back for my bus & unconsciously looking for the girl. She was still there with the sad look on her face. After going few minutes ahead, I retraced my steps. There was a lady selling bananas. Bought half a dozen bananas for Rs.15, gave it to the girl. Told her to stop pestering the fruit seller, go home & give these to her mother. She and the fruit seller just looked on. Didn't want to lecture the fruit seller, cause he was trying to do business and these children must be a daily thing for him.He had fruits like apple, strawberry, watermelons,.. which are anyways costly.  He didn't look the mean types and must be giving these kids the bad fruits whenever he could. But from experience know these people and kids are very persistent and arrogant when they notice you softening.

At least I could sleep peacefully yesterday. Hope the girl and her family did too. Hope she gets a good education. Leads a better life.

Dont know how these small deeds will help but would do them instead repent not doing anything about it.

Event:Mood Indigo IIT, Mumbai Fest 2013

Hii ..wassup people!!
Well on 23rd December I went to MoodI or Mood Indigo at IIT-Powai. I decided to check it out with my friend on Monday late afternoon. My friends-classmate (a long big connection I know) stays  in IIT-Powai campus. So she decided to be our guide in that huge colony(you may get lost if you wander around alone.. :P)

So mood indigo  or  fondly called moodi is –Asia’s Largest cultural fest which is held every year at IIT-Powai in the month of December. This year moodi was organised for 4 days from 20th December to 23rd December 2013. These 4 days had various activities arranged in categories of-all 4day events, entire day, competition, in-formals etc. This year they had a Chinese theme!!

For more info visit: www.moodi.org/

So along with her we went for a tour of IIT-Powai...
The entrance is a Chinese gate with beautiful vibrant colour with mood indigo painted on it. The entire event area was decorated with Chinese lanterns and lighting's. All along the way you had posters and banners of sponsors and stalls.

The main entrance to the fest!!

We went roaming  around the campus which is huge ..we got tired  but continued on as the paths were filled with people enjoying the cultural fest of IIT-Powai which gave us energy and the spirit to enjoy even more!!

We finally stopped near the sumo-wrestling stand (sorry couldn’t  click a pic). After looking for a while, we decided to go to the auditorium near it (we have no idea of what was going on there...were all confused!!)

The sumo-wrestling ground and other events that were going on!!
In the auditorium, the Humour-Fest show was going to begin. The auditorium was fully packed and there was no place to sit. So we stood watching.

The full packed auditorium!!pheww!!
A German  guy came up on the stage in half pants  which belonged to  his father, it was long one once upon a time and he had cut it in half as it was too hot (he joked about it), was skinny, bald and wore a white shirt with suspender!! He introduced himself as Schorosh Bross from Eureka convo group.

He interacted with the  audience, cracking numerous joke and comments (guess that's what makes a great comedian). He had numerous instruments or trick which had the audience in fits of laughter a lot!!

Schorosh interacting with a guy from the audience

Schorosh on one-tire-cycle with a broom on his forehead and 4 rings that goes on top of the broom!! Was a very superb-thrilling performance!!
After the show ended we headed again for the tour of the campus. There was one ground which held the R1 racing cars (which was very exciting to see as I had not seen them before in reality). The event was called Sahara Force India Pitstop Challenge. Sorry, We were the only spectators there..(haha).
The R1 racing cars of Sahara Force India Pitstop Challenge

The ground also had a statue of a laughing Buddha which was lying on his side and laughing (funny fellow) and had Chinese lanterns hung all over the place, which looked very lovely and beautiful.
The multicoloured Chinese-lanterns

The laughing buddha!!

We picked up one of the Chinese lantern’s which was lying down as souvenir for us .:P

To end the awesome day at IIT-Powai ,we went to the IIT-Powai Lake for a walk! The sun was setting down and the cool-atmosphere made it all the more special ( sone pe suhaga types). After a few clicks and little chit-chatting we made our way home.

Hope you all loved the tour of mood-indigo!!
So have a super-fantabulously lovely day ahead!!:)

Festival: Merry Christmas 2013!

Merry Christmas Everyone ! :)
 Oh forgot to inform,
Christmas is cancelled,
You told Santa you were good this year :D

This was the message for Christmas week at St.Michaels Church, Mahim. The festive spirit is sure infectious. I did a good deed for which I am still pleased even after 2weeks, read about it Incident: Bus ticket paid in full

Everywhere the celebrations are getting bigger and bigger. Check the Huge Christmas tree at Korum Mall, Thane.

My baby boy, 7months old was visited by Santa himself prior to Xmas & gifted lots of gifts and candy. Courtesy, my sis-in-laws workplace started an initiative-Secret Santa, to send gifts to family members via Santa at their doorstep. We thought our little guy will get scared, but he was all gigling when Santa picked him in his arms. Thank you Santa & sis-in-law :)

Like every year my parents and sisters we visit our school, Loreto Convent to look at the crib. This year took our baby boy too. He was captivated by the glittering lights. Baby Jesus amidst us Live :)

This year we went to OLPS church too, but were late and missed the Xmas Mass for which we actually got out. But got to see the beautifully lit up Church and its grounds. Again our lil guy was mesmerised with lights and the cheerful people all dressed up.

Incident: Bus ticket paid in full

Good day!
Awesome day ! Feeling a glad feeling :)
Watching videos, reading stories at Upworthy, Lifevest Inside, SimpleTruths, Kindness week.... some of it actually rubbed in. Didnt have to volunteer, go to an NGO, make a donation.
Only one deed made my day!

Today while waiting for my bus in Thane, saw an old Maharashtrian grandma asking a young man about buses. She sat down on the edge of the foothpath, she seemed tired and had difficulty breathing.

She was dressed in a new yellow nauwari saree (9yards), not pulled up from behind, but draped like a normal saree like both my grandmothers used to. She wore huge sets of red glass bangles with gold ones  in between, a gold multi chain necklace, hair neatly tied in a bun covered by her saree palu which she never let slip down, leather chappals, had a clean bag which she held dearly. She was a widow marking the absence of big bindi on forehead. Her face was calm, kind, wrinkled with age, eyes tired but sharply looking for her bus. I kept observing her for few minutes. Everything about her attire & mannerism said, She was a lady from a well cultured middle class family.

After much convincing myself to go & help her in someway, I asked her where she wanted to go. She said Sion. I asked her where in Sion, she said near Sion depot there is private hospital she has to go for checkup. She was alone. She said her daughter will be coming to Sion to pick her up.

I remembered my granny who used to have difficulty travelling, spending hours at the bus stop trying to find the correct bus and more importantly climbing the High steps among the jostling crowd and then suffering the bumps. If it was a long distance travel avoiding going to the bathroom in fear that the bus will leave without her or not able to identify the bus among others. Both my granny's preferred  travelling by private cars for long journeys or taxi for short distance. But would hesitate as they couldnt afford it themselves & too self respecting to ask for it from us. So my parents and us sisters used to try as much as possible to get their travels comfortable and convenient. I used to pick and drop my maternal granny from my mama's place to ours in Taxi and then go to office. She would bless me everytime & on the way talk about life and many teachings which we still fondly discuss and have turned true in our experience too.

So I decided today I will pay for the bus ride and drop this granny nearest to her hospital. I too had to go to Sion. There are 2 buses from Thane to Sion. One option is AC buses, comfortable and fast but expensive, 1way ticket 70Rs. The other is C42 bumpy, fast and little cheaper Rs.29. The AC bus was coming so asked her if she would like to take it but is costly, she said she takes the red one(C42) and she wouldnt have any money left for the hospital then. Told her Ill take her, dont worry. She said No, No, you go your bus will go. I kept insisting for 2-3times. Then she just smiled and held my hand. I was elated !

While helping her climb into the bus, saw she had kind of braces around her back, shoulder, waist. Another lady helped her get into a seat. I asked her what she was getting treated for. She said she had got a back operation done 1 year ago & had to wear the braces all time to stay upright, only during sleep she could remove it. I paid for her ticket & gave it to her.
The other lady started talking to me, she was new to Mumbai, had just come from Cochin after getting her sister transferred to Cochin from Bangalore after suffering a stroke, was a grandmother to a 10day baby boy who was in ICU for a birth problem and fits. She got down at Chedda nagar, told her your grandson and entire family will be healthy.
In between we asked granny more about herself. Her village is in Satara. She knew my maternal and paternal native places. Her surname is Karat. She has 2 daughters, 3sons and around 6-7 grandkids. Her daughter-in-law was working and son alone with kids, hence she used to travel alone to hospital. Her son-in-law is good, he payed half the amount for her back operation but she feels guilty about staying with her daughter, so she commutes to village after her checkup and then back to Thane before the next checkup which is every 2-3 months. Today her daughter had gone ahead to get an early number in queue, it was 12pm, by 1pm she should be done and they would have lunch which her daughter got, but she didn't like it much coz of the hospital stench. Her brother and his wife stay around her house in her village. The brothers wife accompanies her during travel from Satara to Mumbai. Her sense of direction and geography were superb, knew how to go to Mahim via Dharavi from Sion :0 . The operation has relieved much of her back pain and she can move around, but the pain and difficulty of doing her chores makes her want to ask for death :(.
Motivated her, to thank God for the operation, family to take care of her, facilities, no other health issues except back. Told her about my granny's health issues and travelling difficulties. She smiled and again I could see my granny's face. Every few mins she used to Thank me saying God bless you, only our people help each other. Told her my habit of being escort for my grannies and grandpas, so today you remind me of my granny so I am escorting you.
At Sion, she said her she will go on her own from there, dont get more late because of me, go to your office. Caressed my face with both hands, smiled and waved bye.

My pleasure ! I am kicking myself for not clicking a snap of her.
Hope she feels hale and hearty, has appetite for food, can move around freely, can afford comfortable travelling, good people around to take care of her, medical facilities... Enjoys her life.

Today I am feeling invincible. A small deed of kindness, can benefit both parties and sometimes lot many people.

Yesterday's incident was also something along the lines of Doing something helpful- Incident: Chain snatching.
Here is my Aaji:

Have a great week ahead.
Try to do 1deed of kindness today, plz !

Incident: Chain snatching

Good day ppl!

Upsetting end to the day. Today during an afternoon walk at Matunga west had seen a big banner announcing Women pedestrians to walk on foothpaths for their safety and avoid chain snatching incidents. I was like WTH women cant walk on streets now!

Now evening 7pm got out of my office in Mahim, a bike with 2guys at break neck speed whizzed past. Few steps ahead a small group was forming around a lady. She was giving the choisest sanskrit words when someone suggested she report her chain being snatched to the police. Her neck was bleeding, was fumbling while walking along with fumming. Thankfully she had younger woman for company so I walked on towards my bus stop 2mins away.

On reaching it I saw a mobile police van parked a little ahead. I fast walked to it, informed them about the incident. They quickly took out a notebook asking me to give the bike number and description of the boys. I didnt have any, just wanted to do something about the whole incident. Mixed feelings, good plus disappointed couldnt be of help.

What would you do? How to stop such incidents?

Think about it and let us know.

Festival: Divyachi Amavasya 2013

Good day ppl !

Writing a post after a long time. This is about the last day of Aashad month.
The next day being the start of Shravan, this day is more popularly known as Gatari Amavasya.
Its called Aashad Amavasya or Divyachi Amavasya.
Diva means Deep or Lamp. Amavasya means No Moon Day.

All the lamps in our house.
I am writing a post about this day because of the unique way it is celebrated. On this day, all the lamps in the house are cleaned and decorated. In Indian festivals, lamps play a major role & a variety of them are used on each occassion. To give them rest and worship them, this day is specially chosen. My mother-in-law does this every year. Also she is an avid collector of lamps, so there were a range of lamps to clean & decorate.

It is also believed that Deepa Puja provides them Asta Aishwarayas (8 types of wealth).
They clean and sanctify a 'Chourang' ie a table with decoration and  rangoli (kolam) designs around it. All the deepas are placed on the table and decorated to perform pooja. Lamps made in the shape of 'panti' from flour are lit instead to perform pooja.

Check the photos below of the pooja we performed.

This lamp is like a weighing scale with a lamp dangling on each corner.

Alladin lamp. My mother-in-law's special find, a genie may pop out soon ;)

Panch aarti or flower shaped lamp.

This lamp has special storage for oil in the bowl above. So oil is regularly supplied to the lamp.

World-Suspended Coffee

Good day ppl !
The long weekend is here. Hope you are enjoying it to the fullest. I am :)

I read this short real life story on Facebook, thought would like to share.

Suspended Coffee

This story will warm you better than a coffee on a cold winter day:
"We enter a little coffeehouse with a friend of mine and give our order. While we're approaching our table two people come in and they go to the counter -
'Five coffees, please. Two of them for us and three suspended'
They pay for their order, take the two and leave. I ask my friend:
'What are those 'suspended' coffees ?'
'Wait for it and you will see'
Some more people enter. Two girls ask for one coffee each, pay and go. The next order was for seven coffees and it was made by three lawyers - three for them and four 'suspended'. While I still wonder what's the deal with those 'suspended' coffees I enjoy the sunny weather and the beautiful view towards the square in front of the café. Suddenly a man dressed in shabby clothes who looks like a beggar comes in through the door and kindly asks
'Do you have a suspended coffee ?'
It's simple - people pay in advance for a coffee meant for someone who can not afford a warm beverage. The tradition with the suspended coffees started in Naples, but it has spread all over the world and in some places you can order not only a suspended coffee, but also a sandwich or a whole meal."

This is the system of Pay it Forward. There is a beautiful movie-Pay it forward, about this same principle.
I am going to do this for Tea whenever I can.

The world now is becoming more tense, tough, greed filled, fear striken,.... it needs a lot of love, gratitude, heroism, courage, charity,... all the feel-good qualities to heal.

Good Day - Habits

Hi Good day ppl !
Today morning this sight of fresh, perky flowers greeted me. Made my day ! :)

It feels good to be doing something different which has been difficult for you since a long time.

For me, its getting up early & getting ready for work. I would love to add exercise, walk on the lawn, meditate, make breakfast, read the newspaper,... etc to my morning schedule as a habit. I have tried it, it can be done but at the cost of being insanely late plus tired even before you get out of the house.

So after reading a lot of blog posts on habits, trying permutations and combinations with myself. I am working on sticking to one habit at a time. Read more on Habits, making them stick, working with them till you make the transition at Zenhabits.

A friend used to everyday send me Good Morning mails. I have posted a lot of them on this blog. Check all Good Morning Quotes posts.

This old mail also says the same thing.

Habit is stronger than reason.

So push yourself a little more. Reward yourself. Soon you will make it a Habit :)

Have a great weekend. Bye. Tc.

Good day ppl !
Chillar party !
Yesterday while eating out, saw this funny banner.

Guess now getting change is a big issue for shop keepers too.
Customers expect the shopkeepers to give them change for whatever denomination of money they give. Banks dont give change easily and in black market you are charged Rs.8-10 extra.

So this innovative shopkeeper has put up this banner, which might work in getting customers to pay exact change for their purchases.

Translation-Give change of Rs. 200 and get one Vada Pav (indian burger) free. -By Order

Jokes-Harry belongs in 3rd grade

:D :D Good day ppl !

No I am not being naughty.
This is a Hilarious post. A forwarded mail from a friend, had me rolling in laughter, so had to post this one.

Image from http://www.animationbuddy.com/Animation/Creatures_and_Cartoons/Cartoon_Characters/calvin_at_school.gif

A first-grade teacher, Ms Brooks, was having trouble with one of her students.  The teacher asked, "Harry, what's your problem?"

Harry answered, "I'm too smart for the 1st grade. My sister is in the 3rd grade and I'm smarter than she is!  I think I should be in the 3rd grade too!"

Ms. Brooks had enough.  She took Harry to the principal's office.

While Harry waited in the outer office, the teacher explained to the principal what the situation was. The principal told Ms. Brooks he would give the boy a test.  If he failed to answer any of his questions he was to go back to the 1st grade and behave.  She agreed.

Harry was brought in and the conditions were explained to him and he agreed to take the test.

Principal: "What is 3 x 3?"

Harry: "9."

Principal: "What is 6 x 6?"

Harry: "36."

And so it went with every question the principal thought a 3rd grader should know.

The principal looks at Ms. Brooks and tells her, "I think Harry can go to the 3rdgrade."

Ms. Brooks says to the principal, "Let me ask him some questions."

The principal and Harry both agreed.

Ms. Brooks asks, "What does a cow have four of that I have only two of?"

Harry, after a moment: "Legs."

Ms Brooks: "What is in your pants that you have but I do not have?"

The principal wondered why would she ask such a question!

Harry replied: "Pockets."

Ms. Brooks: "What does a dog do that a man steps into?"

Harry: "Pants."

The principal sat forward with his mouth hanging open.

Ms. Brooks: "What goes in hard and pink then comes out soft and sticky?"

The principal's eyes opened really wide and before he could stop the answer, Harry replied, "Bubble gum."

Ms. Brooks: "What does a man do standing up, a woman does sitting down and a dog does on three legs?"

Harry: "Shake hands."

The principal was trembling.

Ms. Brooks: "What word starts with an 'F' and ends in 'K' that means a lot of heat and excitement?"

Harry: "Firetruck."

The principal breathed a sigh of relief and told the
teacher, "Put Harry in the fifth-grade, I got the last six questions wrong... "

;) Rolling in the deep of laughter you can say.

Have a fantastic week ahead. :)
